[updated] My Tips on Plurking

I love Plurk. I really do. It is very much addicting and especially with lots of great friends to Plurk with. It is really fun to easily distract me from work. So here are some tips to have a generally productive working day while also Plurking:

1. Make sure you have cool friends in your list. These are my criteria of cool friends:

a. They could raise and talk good subjects.

b. They have good taste of music, movie and art. And even if they don’t It won’t matter as long as they won’t boo other people’s taste.

c. They are supportive, non-judgmental people, AA group material. Really it’s nice to have friends like that who say Happy Birthday and give you rawk-smiley, and say “let’s kill the bitch” when you’re angry. Also send you a cozy-hug icon when you’re sad. People to say hi and bye everyday.

d. They are crazy fun, party goers, insane food addict, coffee praisers, sleeps rarely, net-junkie.

e. Not a karma chaser. And if they do… they do it quietly. And if they couldn’t hold their sadness for not having enough Karma to get nice smiley.. be nice and share your ONION from Neofreko… yes, explain too about how to make it work on their browser. Sharing is the key on social network, people..

2. Open your browser and you work, place it side by side on your screen. Oh sorry.. that’s for my God made wide screen. OOOOHHH Open them both! Multi-tasking is still trendy!

3. Try your best to keep it on 50-50 ratio between those 2 windows. If you have more than 2 windows, I’ll say the portion goes to the categories: WORK & PLURK.

4. Mute those subjects you’re not interested in. If somebody keeps on Plurking uninteresting subjects (this is one of the sign of a Karma chaser) but they still make good responses, go to his/her timeline and click “do not follow _____’s timeline” (well, I do this coz I don’t want to make them lose their Karma for un-friend them). When they continuously posting bad Plurk and response in the same way, just simply kick them off out your list.

5. Don’t hesitate to use “mark all as read” when your work is heavy.

6. Open few tabs for other people’s timelines. This will make a lot more easier for you to follow on interesting people with interesting Plurk.

7. Make CLIQUEs to group your friends so you could Plurk without filling other people’s timeline especially when they won’t be able to response on the subject. (eg. language issue). My friend Snydez called it “Friendly Plurk”

8. Gee, I gotta get back to work, if I have any additional tips, I’ll update later. The last tip for now is always be respectful (or at least try!). Those Plurk buddy of yours may not be visible in front of you but they are real people with real feeling. So careful what you type.

There you go… I hope my friend Imansyah will read this and have more fun on Plurk. He has been a very nice Plurking buddy and I adore his pictures too. Thanks to all of my cool Plurk buddies.

25 Oct 2008 UPDATE:

on point 1.b : Damn! I wrote that? For those who love one particular local band. No apology, people. I still have to boo on that band.

on point 2 & 3 : Don’t have a wide screen? Side by side windows looks suck? Try to use an AIR application: SocialAddict. The size is compact enough you can have more space on the screen for your work. What SocialAddict does is loads the mobile or iPhone version of each site for easy access.

Within SocialAddict you’ll find:

  • BrightKite
  • Facebook
  • FriendFeed To Go
  • Hellotxt
  • Jaiku
  • MySpace
  • Ping.fm
  • Plurk
  • Pownce
  • SocialThing
  • and Twitter

on point 1.c : I happen to be very judgmental, so maybe I’m not so good for you to add as friend. I will go to your timeline to check your age, your plurk-stat and even visit your sites before I make you friend. I read your plurk and I read your responses too. I will deny those below 18 years old and who plurk more than response. I notice Plurk is a microblogging site, anybody is allowed to plurk anything. I still judge you anyway. I will immediately un-follow racist, sexist and morons. I do not fancy silly subjects which will lead me to nothing. I prefer funny plurks. I click every link you share, so you better give me something good or funny but not dumb.

For those who share the same destiny: to plurk from office while we should be doing something else, allow me to give you another hint. This Plurk can consume your time like hell, before you know it the clock will say you have to go home. At least manage your time carefully if you use Plurk simpy to have some fun.

In case you haven’t noticed, Plurk can be a powerful tool if you know how and who to peer with. I will have to write another post on that subject.
